Forbes.com, one of the world’s widely visited business websites, has just named Chinese-Filipino tycoon Henry Sy, who has a net worth of $14.4 billion, the Philippines’ richest man for eight straight years.

Sy, 90, has diverse business interests in real estate, retail, hospitality, banking, mining, education, and health care.  He is best known for his SM supermalls, a chain of at least 52 malls across the Philippines.

According to Forbes, Sy is “even richer as the value of his publicly traded conglomerates, SM Investments and SM Prime Holdings [which operates SM supermalls], have increased by 17% and 20%, respectively over the past year.” He was valued at $12.7 billion last year.

Sy’s further “growth plans involve building ‘micro cities’ around some of his existing mall properties with the objective to build 10 mixed-used townships by 2020 as part of an estimated $11 billion expansion,” Forbes added.

Other Filipino businessmen who made the Philippines’ richest list were John Gokongwei (Robinsons malls), Andrew Tan (Alliance Global), Lucio Tan (Philippine Airlines), Enrique Razon, Jr. (International Container Terminal Services), George Ty, Family Aboitiz, Jaime Zobel de Ayala (Ayala Corporation), David Consunji (DMCI), Tony Tan Caktiong, Oscar Lopez (ABS-CBN Broadcasting), Dean Lao (D&L Industries), Fred Elizalde (Manila Broadcasting Co.), Gilberto Duavit (GMA Network), Menardo Jimenez (GMA Network), and Felipe Gozon (GMA Network).
