Manila, Philippines—Nearly 85-year-old real estate company Ortigas & Company, whose prime projects include the redevelopment of the Greenhills Shopping Complex in Quezon City and  Capital Commons in Pasig City, has brought in structural engineers and geological engineers from the United States, Magnusson Klemencic Associates, and Langan Treadwell Rollo, respectively, and structural engineers from Canada, RWDI Consulting Engineers and Scientists, to ensure that its newest residential towers can withstand major earthquakes.

Ortigas & Company has interests in residential condominiums Maven (62 stories high), The Imperium (62 stories high), and The Royalton (64 stories high), which are all located in Capital Commons at the corner of Meralco Avenue and Shaw Boulevard in Ortigas Center, Pasig City.

The real estate company is also behind Viridian, a 53-story luxury tower in Greenhills Shopping Complex, and Avila Tower, a 41-story condominium in Circulo Verde, Quezon City.

“[These] towers were designed using state-of-the-art structural design procedures, including the use of a performance-based seismic design (PBSD) process,” said Joey Santos, Real Estate Division general manager. “Through PBSD, the building is analyzed using advanced non-linear modeling techniques to estimate structural demands of tall structures, which can often be missed in the traditional design process…”

Maven has shear core wall systems; The Imperium has buckling restrained brace, and The Royalton and Viridian have central ductile concrete cores and exterior outrigger columns.

“Rather than crumbling and collapsing, the buildings absorb the energy of the forces; they move, sway, and yield, thus limiting damage,” said Brian Morgen, senior associate at Magnusson Klemencic Associates.

Ortigas & Company’s Capital Commons is a 10-hectare mixed-used development that features modern living spaces, office facilities, and commercial establishments. Circulo Verde, on the other hand, is a 12-hectare self-contained community.
