Manila, Philippines—The only way to find out is to catch the record-smashing film “A Second Chance,” a sequel to the 2007 cult romantic film “One More Chance,” which introduced Filipino audiences to fictional couple Popoy Gonzales, an engineer, and Basha Eugenio, an architect. The movie, starring John Lloyd Cruz (Popoy) and Bea Alonzo (Basha), has been making a killing in box office sales, which has earned PhP200 million as of Sunday, November 29.  It opened last Wednesday, November 25.

“A Second Chance,” directed by Cathy Garcia-Molina and written by Vanessa Valdez and Carmi Raymundo, follows Popoy and Basha’s first seven years of a troubled marriage, which started out very promising: the couple dreams of running their own architectural engineering firm and raising their own children in their dream house.

“It takes courage to face the reality that love is not always about wines and roses,” said John Lloyd in a statement. “It’s brave to ask, ‘What if?’ But it’s even braver to embrace, ‘What is.’ That’s the core of our story.”

Besides John Lloyd and Bea, the film, produced and distributed by Star Cinema, also features Billy Crawford (Pedro, Popoy’s cousin), Arci Muñoz (Ara), Al Tantay (Willie), Dimples Romana (Krizzy), Janus Del Prado (Chinno), James Blanco (Kenneth), Bea Saw (Anj), Ahron Villena (JP), Melissa Mendeaz (Elvis), and Shamaine Buencamino (Rose, Basha’s mom).

The original film, “One More Chance,” which explores the anatomy of a breakup, has been deeply ingrained in Pinoy popular culture because of its memorable movie quotes such as “She loved me at my worst; you had me at my best, at binalewala mo lang lahat ng ‘yun…” and “Mahal na mahal kita at ang sakit sakit na.

Its sequel, “A Second Chance,” holds the record for the highest ticket sales on opening day, outside the Metro Manila Film Festival, which grossed PhP43 million.
