Six Things to Consider When Renting a Room or Bed Space

For students and young professionals who are renting a room or bed space for the first time, finding the perfect place to live near your school or office is a tough thing.

There are six things to consider before you move into your new home; we’ve listed some of them below:

  • Location

The place where you’re going to rent should be near your office or school, hospitals, malls, public transportation, and anything else you may need.  If you have a car, a place with a parking spot is good.  Above all, the location of your new home should be safe.

  • Security

Besides the location, safety and security of your neighborhood are also some of the things you should remember. How secure is your room? Are there CCTVs, security guards, and police stations nearby? In the case of fire, are there fire exits and alarm boxes near you?

  • Rental Rate

How much are you willing and able to pay every month? Research what are the typical rental rates in your preferred neighborhood—you may ask around the neighborhood or research online. Double check if the utility bills and Internet access costs are included or excluded in the rental rate.

  • Amenities

Ask the landlord if there are air conditioners in the rooms, laundry area, and kitchen?  Most importantly, ask how many private or common bathrooms are there.  Is there a parking lot for tenants who have their own cars?

  • Visitors and Pets

Will it be OK to host visitors?  Is there a common room for visitors? The student tenant might need to do a group work at home at some point.

Will it also be OK to bring home a pet such as a dog or a cat?

  • Lifestyle

Are the daily cleaning of the room; doing the laundry; cooking, and washing the dishes included or excluded in the rental rate? Is it OK to be noisy sometimes or you always need to be quiet?
