Manila, Philippines—Construction solutions company Holcim Philippines Inc. has partnered with the University of the Philippines (UP) for an elective course, Holcim Philippines’ sustainable construction course, which aims to teach civil engineering students the best practices of sustainable construction.

Guest lecturers and industry experts will discuss topics such as sustainable design, environmental and social issues in the construction industry, and the latest technologies in sustainable construction.

The course is part of the advocacy initiatives of Zurich-based LafargeHolcim Foundation, which supports projects that combine sustainable construction with architectural excellence. The foundation also encourages the global construction industry to play a more proactive role in shaping a sustainable future.

“The construction industry has a direct role in development. If the industry shifts toward a more sustainable path, it can have a more positive impact. Through this program, we hope to raise awareness among some of the country’s future builders that they can help lead the industry towards building better,” says Holcim Philippines President and CEO John Stull.

In the fourth quarter, the students are encouraged to join the global competition for sustainable design spearheaded by LafargeHolcim Foundation. About USD 2 million in prizes are at stake for the regional and global winners in the student and professional categories.
