Secure your Home this Summer
By Dustine Myrrha Reyes
Summer is a perfect time for a vacation; it means going out of the house to enjoy the summer heat. But before you do that, make sure to not overlook your home’s security. Here are some tips to prevent home casualties that could happen while you’re away:
- Check all possible entry points.
Checking the entry points of the house such as the doors, windows, locks, door knobs, and even the hole of the air conditioner is essential particularly when no one is at home. An unsecured entrance may be a way for thieves to break in your house. Check if these things are functioning well; if not, fix or change them before leaving the house.
- Unplug unused appliances.
Never leave your house without unplugging all appliances and gadgets from the power outlet to prevent a fire from happening.
- Ask the help of a trusted friend or neighbor.
Ask a trusted friend or neighbor to keep an eye on your house. Give your friend a key to pick all your mails, feed your pet, and open the light at night. Opening lights at night will make thieves think that there’s a person inside and will also make your home lively. Your friend should also have your contact information in case of an emergency.
- Have Pet Guards.
Pet dogs can be very useful in guarding your home against thieves. The barking of the dog can scare thieves.
- Keep important things.
Keep important things such as documents and money in a safe place.
- Invest in Home Security Systems.
Investing in an alarm system such as CCTV cameras is a good safety precaution. You can actually check CCTV camera footage on your mobile gadget or tablet.
- Think before you click.
Posting the details of your trip online is a big no and is really not a good idea. It is a way to invite thieves to barge into your house.
