Marikina City is a highly modernized and industrialized city. It was established in 1630 and became a city in 1996. Like other places in the country, it was once a rural residential area. Marikina is popularly known as the "Shoe Capital of the Philippines" because of its reputation in shoemaking. Essentially, Marikina has the biggest shoe manufacturing industry in the country. Tourists visit the Philippine International Footwear Center where shoes of the best quality are sold. The Shoe Museum is also a popular place as it showcases the shoe collections of the former First Lady Imelda Marcos and some local artists. Apart from being the country's shoe capital, however, there are lots of other things that Marikina boasts:
There are three shopping malls in the city namely SM City Marikina, Riverbanks Mall, and Blue Wave Mall. SM City Marikina is comprised of different shops, restaurants, cinemas, boutiques, a supermarket, a department store, and an entertainment hall. The Riverbanks Mall, located at the Marikina Riverbanks Center, offers affordable products and shopping items via various stalls, shops, and retail stores. Among the three malls, the Blue Wave Mall is the most luxurious; it has state-of-the-art cinemas and upscale restaurants.
Marikina is also a great place for foodies as it offers both local and international cuisines. Some of the most popular dishes in Marikina are everlasting, laoya, and waknatoy. For international cuisines, one can head to Lilac Street, a famous food destination that features restaurants serving dishes from Japan, Singapore, Thailand, America, and some countries in Europe. The wide selections of food here are very affordable.
Many people choose to live in Marikina City not only because of the above perks but also because of its very good reputation. Significantly, Marikina was recognized as the "Cleanest and Greenest City" and the "Most Competitive Metro City." Today, its gated communities are even growing as the city's economy also booms. Some of the famous residential communities here are Timberland Heights, Woodridge Valley Heights, and the Rancho Estates. Owning a house and lot in any of these gated communities will surely make anyone really pleased and at ease.
