Established in 1572, Pasig City is one of the oldest local government units in the country. It was then the provincial capital of Rizal until it became part of Metro Manila in 1975 and became a city in 1994. With a total land area of 31.46 km2, Pasig is made up of 30 barangays and two districts. It used to be a rural residential area with few establishments. However, as years passed, more establishments and industrial centers were built until it became one of the most urbanized and centralized cities in the country. What made Pasig even more progressive was the establishment of the Ortigas Business Central District (CBD). Pasig has also fast become a popular tourist spot and residential hub because of the following:
The Ortigas CBD is home to lots of international and local companies and hotels such as San Miguel Corporation, the Philippine Stock Exchange, Department of Education, the Integrated Bar of the Philippines, and the five-star hotel Crowne Plaza. Another popular development area is Frontera Verde, which has a park, mall, restaurants, villages, pet shops, and a small zoo. Other popular commercial hubs in the city are Metrowalk, Tiendesitas, and El Pueblo.
While Pasig has turned into a modern city, some of its parts remain historical and cultural, which entice lots of tourists. One of the historical places in the city is the Immaculate Concepcion Cathedral, popularly known as the Pasig Cathedral, which is the first Marian parish in the country. Another famous church is the Beaterio de Pasig and Chapel, which was damaged by an earthquake in 1880 but was renovated in the 1960s. Old houses also grace some parts of the city, which include the oldest stone house in Pasig, the Bahay na Tisa, owned by the Tech family up to its seventh generation. Another old residence is the Cuartel del Guardia Civil, which was constructed in 1881 and served as a prison during the American Civil War. The Pasig Museum is also a very historical place because it became a Japanese headquarter during the Japanese war.
Not only is Pasig City known for its commercial establishments but it's also popular for its first-rate real estate developments. Apart from the high-rise condominiums that comprise the business districts in Pasig, the city also offers upscale residential houses.
